An American Treasure (2019)
Tom Petty: An American Treasure was released on September 28th 2018. On August 22nd we had a listening party at Village Recorder. Here’a an article about the event from Variety and another one from The Los Angeles Times Here’s a more in-depth article from Rolling Stone published online on September 5th 2018. And for the audio geek, here’s a more in-depth article from the November 2018 edition of Mix Magazine that talks about the mixing and mastering of the project.
The Best Of Everything (2018)
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ The Best Of Everything was released on March 1st 2019. “As a supplement to last year’s critically lauded box setAn American Treasure,The Best Of Everythingwas born from Petty’s long-term desire to release what he believed to be his strongest material across his four decades of songwriting. This “greatest hits” type release was put together around the same time we were finishing An American Treasure (see below), so the mastering is pretty consistent between both projects. They do work well together!
Bidin’ My Time (2017)
e last album Tom and I worked on was Chris Hillman’s “Bidin’ My Time”. Here’s a good review from Glide Magazine . I think the albums that I’ve worked on that I love are the ones that fell together quickly and naturally. Chris’ album was exactly that. One of his greatest gifts is that he’s a singer that doesn’t sound like he’s “singing”. He’s just telling the truth. Johnny Cash had that too. He also gave me a huge compliment in a recent article, so it’s a bit of a mutual admiration society!
MusiCares (2017)
Tom was named the2017 Musicares Person Of The Year” for the Grammy Foundation. On February 10th 2017, there was a benefit concert featuring Tom Petty & Heartbreakers as well as many other artists honoring Tom’s music. I was there with engineer Larry Reed in the Denali remote truck which recorded audio and video of the show. Who knows, maybe we’ll get to see it on TV one day...
Mudcrutch 2 (2016)
In 2016We finished the second Mudcrutch album (creatively titled “Mudcrutch 2”). Here’s an L.A. Times review, another one from Glide , and a more in-depth interview with the band.
The Shelters (2016)
Tom and I also worked with a fantastic band calledThe Shelters. Their first album came out in June 2016. (Their album is now available in Hi-Res for $13.98. If you have your computer hooked up to a good loud hi-fi, I strongly recommend you get this version!)
Hypnotic Eye (2014)
In 2014, “Hypnotic Eye” came out, which, believe it or not, was the first #1 album for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (and the first #1 as a producer for me too!). Check out these interviews about the album that I did for Music Radar and Digital Trends. Here’s another interview more focused on 5.1 at soundbard.com There is a very detailed interview I did about Hypnotic Eye online at Sound On Sound Magazine–complete with Pro Tools screenshots (for über geeks only!)
Juan Gabriel (1950-2016)
In August 2016I was saddened byJuan Gabriel’s passing. I engineered and mixed his breakout album “Recuerdos” in 1979, and went on to work with him for the next 10 years (including producing, as it turns out, his #4 song of all time: “Debo Hacerlo”). Juan Gabriel was a huge talent and a cultural icon. He will be missed! Here’s an interview I did about him for Remezcla, a Latin culture website.
